Shark Attack

Mayor rules out netting Byron Bay beaches

The Australian, Page 3

No nets despite sharks

POPULAR beaches in northern NSW are set to remain without safety nets despite the area emerging as one of Australia’s hot spots for shark attacks.

Expatriate Englishman Paul Wilcox died on Tuesday after being attacked by a shark off Main Beach at Byron Bay, the third death and the fifth attack in the area in six years.
Zac Young, 19, was killed by a shark at a beach north of Coffs Harbour last year, and Peter ¥Edmonds, 16, died after being bitten by a shark at Ballina, 30km south of Byron Bay, in 2008.
In 2009, a Brisbane man survived after receiving what authorities called a ‘substantial bite” from a shark at Fingal, about 60km north of Byron Bay, and a man was bitten by a shark at Angourie near Yamba in 2011.
But NSW Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson said there were no plans to extend the shark netting program past the 51 nets between Newcastle and Wollongong.
‘There are no guarantees of safety when entering the ocean, but the NSW government will continue doing all it can to ¥reduce the risk to the people of NSW,” she said yesterday.

Byron Shire Mayor Simon Richardson said that Tuesday’s attack was rare and netting could have devastating effects on the marine life. ‘Naturally when something like this occurs a response, out of fear, is to question should our beaches be netted,” he said. ‘While netting is not a council responsibility, I don’t believe that it would be widely supported in our community and should not be considered within a stunning marine park on our doorstep.”Byron Bay beaches will stay closed until at least noon today or until authorities rule there is minimal risk of another attack.
